I prefer to write a series of posts about a game, looking at titles from different angles - from the business side to the storytelling to the mechanics and so forth.Д«ut if a game just isn't good, what more is there really to say? Maybe I'm selling this one short, but at the same time I'm being as honest as I can be: I wouldn't recommend this game because I can't get past the first two hours of it and I have no reason to think you will. I write about games, but I'm not interested in competing with the big gaming sites when it comes to major reviews. So when should gamers call it quits? When should reviewers? I'm not willing to put more of myself into the game than the game can give back. I have to divide my time between many things, including many different games. I can handle dark games, what I can't handle are games that make me feel like crap because they're so ugly in so many ways. Part of it is simply the pervasive ugliness of the game both graphically and thematically, which Kirk Hamilton, in his excellent review of the gameВ (he's played 12 hours)В lays out in stark detail. The last thing they needed was more time.

How many times now have I read that the game needed more time, that it felt rushed? Cyanide spent seven years cobbling this game together. Part of it also is that Cyanide bit off much more than it could properly chew. After a dozen or so fights, I don't want to fight anymore. Is the combat real-time or turn-based? What sounds clever on paper - the merging of these two systems vis-a-vis a slowdown mode - falls flat in practice. Part of this, I suspect, is that the game doesn't know what it wants to be. I have no desire to talk with the NPCs or, for that matter, to play as the characters you're stuck with. It does not inspire me to learn more about its gameplay.

From Software managed to keep me interested in Dark Souls in spite of its sparse story and sparser tutorial by making the gameplay tense and the combat truly engaging, and by plunging me into a deep mystery that still has me pondering what exactly happened and will happen in this game. Whatever complaints I may have about the game thus far, I'm certain to keep playing.Д¬D Projekt RED made sure of that by having its opening sequences engaging and tightly crafted. Meanwhile, the graphics and voice-acting and writing are all extremely polished. After all, I wasВ learning (and still am) and as I learned my enjoyment of the game increased. The first hour or two of gameplay didn't scare me away - quite the contrary. Still, the game is so finely crafted in so many ways that I can forgive its complexities. There are still some controls that I find inexplicably clumsy. There were several points in my first couple hours of gameplay that had me irritated at the controls. Similarly, the game mechanics of The Witcher 2В are quite complicated at first.
